With rare exceptions, villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are usually quite amicable to the player talking to them. Some may even wave the player down to have a conversation, like when teaching an emote in New Horizons. However, it’s not always the easiest thing to hold a conversation with the generally friendly island inhabitants, as one player found.

Redditor simpilyjustkaleb shared an amusing clip of them attempting to make a regular visit to a villager’s house in their town. Typically, if a villager is at home and awake, the player can simply knock on the door and drop in for a visit. So when simpilyjustkaleb approached Molly the duck’s home, they took notice of her window blinds being open. This is one potential way to test if a villager is home before knocking on their door. Eager to say hello to the duck villager, the player runs up to the door to knock. However, just as they click to do so, the blinds hastily shut and the player is instead greeted with the message that Molly isn’t home.
After clearing the message, the door opens and Molly abruptly steps out, pushing the Animal Crossing: New Horizons player out of the way. At this point it would be possible to have a chat with her, but simpilyjustkaleb and those in the comments seemed amused at her efforts to keep the player out of her house. A few joked that she’s hiding something devious in her home and doesn’t want the player to see. Others were more practical, noting that since she immediately begins sweeping upon her exit, perhaps she’s cleaning up her home and doesn’t want anyone to come in until it’s done.
It takes a lot to upset a villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, especially those with a normal personality type, like Molly. Ultimately, Molly was just following her own routine, and the timing worked out just right to turn into this funny encounter. Especially after Animal Crossing: New Horizons added the ability for villagers to visit the player while they’re at home, it probably struck the player as funny, but also a little irritating to be shut out just as they arrived.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on Nintendo Switch.
