In a match which grew overly physical at times, neither side were able to piece together too many attacking moves of substance, despite individual moments of brilliance from the respective talismans Neymar and Alexis Sanchez.

The most controversial moment of the match was when Chile’s Gary Medel escaped a red card for stamping on Neymar’s calf, an incident which eluded referee Martin Atkinson.

Hoffenheim’s Roberto Firmino was introduced into the fray in place of the ineffective Luiz Adriano on the hour-mark, the move which paid dividends for coach Dunga in what turned out to be a game of narrow margins.

In the 72nd minute, slightly against the run of play, Firmino pounced on a through ball, coolly sidestepped the onrushing goalkeeper, and slotted home without fuss.
