The Bavarian club started off brightly and completely controlled the first half, taking the lead in the 27th minute courtesy Medhi Benatia’s header from a Xabi Alonso set-piece. Despite all the possession, they entered the second half with just a one goal lead, although that scoreline was about to change drastically.

Robert Lewandowski scored his first goal of the season in the 53rd minute, slotting in a calm and simple finish after the ball was cleared straight to him by a Hamburg defender. Tomas Muller followed it up two goals in 4 minutes to put the result beyond doubt. He first nodded home a Douglas Costa cross from the right in the 69th minute and then followed it up with a calm finish past Rene Adler, after expertly rounding the keeper.

Douglas Costa had an impressive debut for his new club after his €30m move from Shakhtar Donetsk, capping off the comprehensive win with a brilliant goal. A slip from a Hamburg defender allowed Costa to pick up the ball on the right edge of the penalty box, who then cut onto his left foot and launched a clinical finish into the bottom left corner.
