Mockups, concept art, and even the developer kits looked quite different from the final consumer version of the PlayStation 5. Not only is the console tall with two white sides extending up and sandwiching a black box in between, but the system is a bit thicker than many expected as well. With many expecting something a bit smaller or similar looking to previous PlayStation generations, the size and design of the PS5 is very much intentional.

In a new post on LinkedIn, Matt MacLaurin who serves as the Vice President of UX Design for PlayStation addressed these design topics and questions. After being asked specifically about the size of the system, MacLaurin answered that the reason is due to heating concerns and keeping the system cool. The PS5, described as a little supercomputer by MacLaurin, is capable of generating a lot of heat, so the added space is specifically there to deal with it. He went on to say that the 7nm process does deliver great heat performance for the extreme amount of power that’s being used.
MacLaurin also dropped a few hints at what Sony may be planning closer to the PlayStation 5 launch date. In a series of comments that have since been deleted, he hinted that there will be numerous special editions available as well. While the white design is the flagship model, MacLaurin assures fans that they can count on even more beautiful and hopefully radical special editions. In addition, he went on to confirm that the customization with special editions will be beyond anything seen before.
Whatever the case may be, the initial PS5 design has also been the subject of numerous memes similar to what Microsoft went through when it initially revealed the Xbox Series X. Fans have been posting all sorts of images of the console, posting the head of Seto Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh on top of it with the white parts looking like the collar to his jacket. While also being called an internet router, lab coat, and more, pizza company Dominoes took it a step further by transforming the look of the PS5 into a pizza and pizza box.
The PS5 will release this holiday season.
