In the fantasy continent of Fodlan where Three Houses takes place, Edelgard was born on the 22nd day of the Garland Moon; which translates to June 22 on the Gregorian calendar. Thus in Japan it is officially Edelgard’s birthday, and with the morally complex future Empress being a fan-favorite character despite there being three sides to choose between while playing, clearly fans of the RPG are taking the opportunity to celebrate.

The Blue Lions led by Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd, the Golden Deer led by Claude von Riegan, and the Black Eagles led by Edelgard all have popular characters with defined birthdays, interests, strengths, and weaknesses that players can get attached to thanks to the dual combat and life simulation aspects of Three Houses. However, Edelgard has stood out to many for being a unique axe-wielding armored lord who can be a compelling ally or one of the series’ more tragic antagonists depending on which nation they choose.

Intelligent System’s Fire Emblem was a notably niche series in the west under Nintendo’s umbrella until the 3DS-era games, Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates, helped to elevate it into a household name. At the end of 2019, Three Houses was on track to becoming the best-selling game in the franchise, and according to Nintendo’s 2019-2020 fiscal year report in May, it has sold nearly 3 million copies.

With that in mind, it makes perfect sense why Edelgard of all characters would break through onto Twitter’s trending page. Fire Emblem is not the only video game property to do so this afternoon, as earlier Pokemon’s Generation 5 was trending due to fans praising Pokemon Black, White, and their sequels.

The Fire Emblem franchise does not have much going on at the moment compared to Pokemon, though its mobile title Fire Emblem Heroes continues updating with new characters every other week. Thus it’s nice to see fans coming together to celebrate an important date in the world of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is available now on Nintendo Switch.
